Adria Vasil has been writing the practical and humour-filled ECOHOLIC advice column for Toronto's NOW Magazine since the spring of 2004 and has covered environmental and social justice issues for NOW's news section for a decade. Vasil has a degree in political science and cultural anthropology from the University of Toronto and a  post-graduate degree in journalism from Ryerson. An advocate for the earth, women's issues and human rights since her teens, Vasil has appeared on CTV, Global, CBC, MTV Canada, MuchMusic as well as countless print and radio publications to promote green living.

Who is ZOE WEIL?

Zoe Weil is an educator, activist and writer who is committed to making positive change in today’s world.  She is co-founder and President of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE, based in Surry, Maine). IHE works to create a world in which we all live humanely, sustainably, and peaceably. The institute trains people to be humane educators who teach about the pressing issues of our time and inspire people to work for change while making healthy, humane, and restorative choices in their daily lives. IHE also works to advance the field of humane education, and to provide tools and inspiration to people everywhere so that they can live examined, meaningful lives.

Zoe is the author of numerous articles and several books, including the following:
• So, You Love Animals: An Action-Packed, Fun-Filled Book to Help Kids Help Animals (1994)
• Above All, Be Kind: Raising a Humane Child in Challenging Times (2003)
• The Power and Promise of Humane Education (2004)
• Most Good, Least Harm: A Simple Principle for a Better World and Meaningful Life (2009)

Zoe recently delivered a TEDx talk entitled, “The World Becomes What You Teach,” which is available online through her website, www.zoeweil.com.

An inspiring and widely requested speaker, Zoe has years of experience leading various groups in humane education activities and, more recently, in workshops based on the MOGO Principle (see below).

Most recently Zoe has produced and developed an entertaining one-woman show entitled, “My Ongoing Problems with Kindness: Confessions of MOGO Girl.” She is enthusiastic about the prospect of launching the official run of this show in Fredericton, NB!

What is “MOGO”?

MOGO is shorthand for “most good,” a quick way of considering what will do the most good and the least harm to yourself, other people, other species, and the environment.

Session 1: Parent Power: The Quiet Revolution

Over 250 parents and educators came to hear Dr. Maggie Mamen speak about  "ParentPower: The Quiet Revolution." She challenged parents to be confident when trying to defend their rights and remember their responsibilities to their children.   Parents left feeling empowered to reclaim their families and be the best parents that they can be.  Thank you to Maggie for sharing her insight and expertise with our community.

About Dr. Mamen:

Dr. Maggie Mamen is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Nepean, Ontario, who specializes in working with children, adolescents and their families. In addition to teaching university courses on child development and exceptional children, Maggie has worked at Carleton University, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the former Carleton Board of Education, and was the first elected president of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Maggie is the author of three books and numerous articles for lifestyle magazines and industry publications, and has appeared on radio and television programs across the country.


Session 2: Ready, Set, Eat!  Pizza and Cookies!!!

Hands-on session on Nutrition for Families.

50 parents registered for a hands-on community kitchen session.  Bad weather on this night prevented 20 from coming but all who attended learned interesting facts about nutrition from nutritionists Allison Brown and Shauna Miller.

Session 3: More Games Please

The City of Fredericton, fredkid and Recreation NB invited Dr. John Byl, educator from Ontario for three nights to show parents just how much fun can you have with a pool noodle and a rubber chicken?!  Attendees learned fun, inexpensive, active games to beat those February Blues.

These sessions were geared to parents with kids aged 5 and above.  This session was also a great resource for educators and daycare workers.  Sessions were held in Oromocto at the Base Gym, and in Fredericton at Leo Hayes High School.


Session 4: Becoming a Green Guru: Eco-tips for Parents and Kids

This fourth session of the fredkid Family Learning Series was presented by Sonya Hull (Green Matters, City of Fredericton) and Peter Corbyn, and featured a FREE Eco-Package valued at over $50.00 for parents who registered.

Eco-kits include items such as:

  • a stainless steel bottle or sippy cup
  • energy efficient light bulb
  • sink aerorater
  • tree to plant as a family
  • cloth bag
  • safe cleaning products
  • and LOTS more!

This lecture was funded by the NB Environmental Trust Fund and the City of Fredericton.

 

   

2009 fredkid Family Learning Series

Session 1: Jiffy, Spiffy Lunchboxes! Healthy Lunches for the Whole Family

30 parents and caregivers joined home economist Marg Routledge and dietician Shauna Miller for a free 2 hour hands-on session. Participants made granola bars and snack squares that can be made on the weekend and easily portioned out for lunches. They also made a nutritious winter squash soup. A handout created by the planning committee contains many delicious recipes and tips for how to make lunches more fun for you to make and your kids to eat. To download a copy of it, click here.

A huge thanks to Paediatric Lifestyle Management Program, the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport, the Fredericton Direct Charge Co-Op and Communities Raising Children for making this evening possible. Another big thank you to our committee of 10 volunteer parents who created and ran the 2009 fredkid family learning series.

Session 2: Internet Safety

Enhanced Internet Literacy – "Creating a safe and productive online environment for your children.”

Presenter Tim Workman helped parents and caregivers understand a range of contemporary issues associated with children of all ages being active on the Internet, as well as highlighting a number of common-use online applications that may be of interest to both parents and children alike.

Session 3: ABCs of the Birds and the Bees

Kids are full of questions and eventually they will ask about sex. Lucia O'Sullivan presented to explore ways to talk about sex with your kids.

Presenter Biography

Marieka Chaplin lives in Fredericton with her husband and two children.  She obtained her university degree and Waldorf teacher certification in Ontario.  Following her training she taught grades 4-6 at the South Shore Waldorf School in Nova Scotia.  Along with other parents in the area, Marieka is interested in building the Waldorf community.

During her talk Marieka Chaplin explored how children under the age of 7 are basically beings of play, fantasy and movement.  Her talk suggested games and movement activities that awaken and develop physical coordination.

Presenter Biography

Judy King lives in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.  She has loved working with children as an educator for over 40 years.  Currently she is the lead kindergarten teacher at the South Shore Waldorf School, NS.  Judy King has led numerous conferences and workshops, sharing her vast experience with participants.  Mrs. King is the faculty co-chair for the school board of directors.

During her talk Judy King looked at basic principles, and ways to establish rhythm in daily life, founded on healthy breathing rhythms - for home and school.
